The hair trends and colours of 2020

Fancy a new hairstyle? Don’t worry, you won’t have to scroll endlessly through Pinterest to find the latest hairdos. We’ve put together a collection of hair trends and colours that we think will be the talk of 2020.

The hot colours for 2020

Giving your hair a new colour can be the easiest way to quickly try out a new look while being more irreversible than a daring new haircut. Whether you’re leaning towards more eye-catching, vibrant colours or more natural-looking shades, there’s bound to be a colour for you this year.

Silvery pastel pink

Grey hair was the talk of the town. Now, it’s all about charcoal tinted pinks. Think silvery shades of grey with soft pink undertones, rosy pinks with a smokey look. It’s the grown-up, modern version of the candy floss pink and is set to be huge this year.

The year of the reds

Red, in all its vibrant and beautiful varieties, is a timeless favourite in the world of hair colour, but it’s destined to be even more on trend this year. Coppers and reddish-brown shades are one of the biggest growing hair trends at the minute, and likely to continue throughout 2019. Channel the auburn stunners of the pre-Raphelite paintings by opting for a warm yet luxurious titian shade that makes anyone look instantly more chic and glamorous.

Au naturel

Natural or natural-looking hair colours are going to be big news in 2020. From cool biscuit blondes to warm, rich shades of brunette, pulling off a low-maintenance hairstyle will put you right on trend this year. Remember that this doesn’t mean you have to go back to your natural colour. You can try out a completely new shade, as long as it looks like a warm natural hair colour (AKA no purples, pinks, blues etc.).

Coloured tips

If you are not wanting to commit to a completely new colour, or want something a little more subtle, then coloured tips is the look for you. To achieve this, try out a natural shade that blends into vibrant coloured tips in a striking purple, electric blue or fresh pink for a stunning update. This is a great look if you are not feeling a complete full-head colour change but still an eye-catching update.

Bold roots

No we're not talking subtle grown out colour or a few natural greys showing here and there, this trend is all about boldness. Think contrasting colours of platinum blonde paired jet black roots (as seen on Dua Lipa) or if you're even more daring why not go all out with lime green roots, if it's good enough for Billie Eilish it's good enough for us.

The latest hairstyles for 2020

2019 was the year of bringing hairstyles back to basics. This trend of no-fuss and low-maintenance hair dos is set to continue in 2020 with hairstyles that speak volumes but require little upkeep.

The new middle ground

Medium length hair is becoming more and more popular. And no mid-length hairstyle is more on trend than the long bob. A growing favourite among women who are either growing out their hair or wanting to stay clear of a dramatic short bob, this hairstyle is a comfortable, fuss-free middle ground that suits nearly every hair type. Ending just above the collarbone, this style adds texture and interest to your hair without needing a fancy blow-dry or a daily once-over with curling tongs.

Living the retro

2020 is going to be the year that takes all the best styles from the past and makes them new again. Retro styling that favours soft, feminine styles will soon be seen on every street as styles from the 60s, 70s, and 80s make a comeback. From voluminous beehives and classic bobs, from curtained bangs to brushed-out Hollywood curls, all the style and glamour of the mid-twentieth century is set to return, but luckily without the fashion sense. Best of both worlds really.

Micro braids

As with any trend, hairstyles seen on the catwalk are quickly copied and reinvented on the street. That’s how we can tell that micro-braiding is going to explode in 2020. What’s micro-braiding you ask? Well, it’s not fairies plaiting your hair. Micro braiding is constructing tiny braids that can be used to add volume and interest to a hairdo. Seen at multiple SS19 fashion shows including Dion Lee, Preen and Bora Aksu, it won’t be long before these minute braids are seen beyond the fashion world.
